2024 is sure shaping up to be a great year for astrophotography! Here we have the final 16 of the nPAE Northern Hemisphere competition. We have a clean sweep of objects for you to choose from: Deep sky, Lunar, Solar, Planetary and Star-scape.

In country alphabetical order we are pleased to present the final 16 for the Public Popular Vote.

Zlatko – Croatia

Digital processing methods employed (if any): Pixinsight – Photoshop

Remi – Frame
Title : NGC 7129
Equipement used: ATIK 460 EX MONO 200/1000 SW EQ6, Telescope: 200/1000 sw, Camera: Atik 460ex, Guide: Asi 290, Mount: eq6 sw
Digital processing methods employed (if any): Nina, pixinsight and Photoshop. L 91x420s, R 51x180s, HA 562x420s, V 51x180s, B 51x180s,Ttotal: 83h50
Extra notes: I started photographing in May. A few rough ones ha but nothing convincing. Taking a look at astrobin, I realized that it was still possible from the image of the astrophotographer Lyaphine to bring out some faint jets of supernova remnants around ngc 7129. Of course, having a lot of luck and aiming to get closer to the image of the 8.2 meter Subaru telescope. Objective achieved with 65 hours of ha acquisition. Obviously the details on this area are not there, but there is signal. It’s great!

Istvan – Hungary
Title of your Astro photo: Tulip Nebula and the Cygnus X-1 black hole
Equipment used: TS-Optics 8″ f/4 UNC Newtonian Telescope with Carbon Tube, ASI2600MC, ZWO AM5
Extra notes: I began my SH2-101 project in 2022, and it took two seasons to capture enough photons for sufficient resolution. Capturing the accretion disk of the Cygnus X-1 black hole required more pictures using with OIII narrowband filters than usual to make it visible. Tulip Nebula (SH2-101): HII region emission nebula, located 6000 light-years away from Earth. Cygnus X-1 black hole’s relativistic jet appears as a blue ellipse in the image. Cygnus X-1 and HD226868 form a binary system, with the former being a 14-15 solar mass black hole with a diameter of 50 km, and the latter being a 15-17 solar mass blue giant, orbiting around the black hole with a period of 5.6 days. The two objects orbit each other at a distance of only 40 times the Sun’s radius. The relativistic jet shockwave is observed in the image, appearing as a blue arc.
The image was taken using narrowband filters, a monochrome and a colour camera. Total exposure time 31 hours Summer of 2022 and 2023, Alsómocsolád, Hungary. Ha 14.5h OIII 15h RGB 1h
